The British era is considered one of the most difficult times for the economy of India. It had drastically damaged the fiscal condition of the country. After facing major difficulties, India managed to restore its infrastructure and industries. During this challenging phase, it was realised that the quality issues in the manufactured goods had to be addressed. For this, a committee of experts was set up. Later, it was observed that India requires a focused body to supervise the quality of products and safeguard the consumers from inferior goods. This realization led to the establishment of the Indian Standards Institute (ISI). It is an organization focused on the development of standardization across industries.
Standardization refers to the process of forming and executing consistent standards or rules for a product or activity in an orderly manner. It guarantees cooperation among all stakeholders for the sustained development of the economy and industry. This is done considering effectiveness, security, and progressive advancements.
At Presto Laboratories – Standardization (Scientific) Division, we are entrusted with the formulation and development of national standards to help industries align with international benchmarks.
The principal role of the Standardization (Scientific) Division is to support and guide industries in the devising of standards.
In India, the process of standardization begins with a proposal submission to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
These entities can request BIS to establish, revise, amend, or cancel an existing standard through a written submission.
Once a proposal is received:
The process begins when a manufacturer requests to include a product under Indian Standards, particularly if no standard currently exists for that category. Presto Laboratories collects the product’s technical specifications and, in some cases, a physical sample to define the necessary parameters for standard formulation.
Once the technical details or samples are received, our management and engineering teams conduct a detailed assessment of the product’s features, scope, and specifications. Proper planning and analysis are carried out to ensure accuracy.
We prepare a draft standard for the definitive product based on the findings. We make sure that it agrees with the domestic and foreign needs.
The drafted document is then sent ahead to BIS for review. A specialized team of experts and engineers examines the draft thoroughly before moving forward.
If BIS is satisfied with the proposal, it grants approval, and the process of official standard formulation begins.
Once approved, BIS publishes the finalized standard, and relevant departments initiate necessary steps for its successful implementation across the industry.
