Highlighted industries are sectors that drive economic growth, innovation, and job creation. They often involve cutting-edge technologies, sustainable solutions.
Farming has been the pillar of the economy of any nation. It sustains individuals, provides employment, and supports industries. In India, almost 60 percent of the population relies on agriculture to earn a living. Economic development is not the only benefit of farming, as it also contributes to environmental balance by cultivating the land and developing greenery. There may be development in science and technology in human beings, but agriculture is the basic life support. The fact that “no agriculture, no life” is a perfect way of explaining its significance. Agriculture is a science and an art that supports life by supplying food and other necessities. However, with time, there were traders who started to add some harmful substances to food commodities as a way of making profits. The Indian government came up with the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act in 1937 in order to safeguard farmers and consumers against such unfair treatment. According to the recommendation of the agriculture and marketing advisory, this act was targeted to safeguard local growers and to ensure that the customers were not cheated by the false or inferior quality products.
AGMARK is a combination of two words, “AG” meaning agriculture and “MARK” meaning certification. It is a government-approved quality mark given to agricultural products in India. AGMARK grading is a system that guarantees the quality of farm products. It works as third-party assurance, meaning an independent government authority checks the product’s quality before giving the mark. This helps consumers identify pure and good-quality products in the market.
Under AGMARK, agricultural goods are divided into grades like “Ordinary,” “Fair,” “Good,” and “Special.” These grades are based on the product’s quality, purity, and composition. Around 220 agricultural products are covered under AGMARK standards, including vegetable oils, cereals, pulses, spices, ghee, and other semi-processed foods.
Except for edible vegetable oils and fat spreads, where certification is mandatory under FSSAI Regulations, AGMARK certification is optional. However, any producer or trader who meets the quality standards can apply for it.
The candidates will be required to complete the given form. Submit it with the necessary documents and fees. The cost and procedure of the registration can differ depending on the type of product. The application is also affected by factors such as the grading fees, processing fees, and commodity specifications.
The applicant should also have adequate facilities to process and grade the product. They should also be able to access an approved laboratory or their testing facility. After satisfying these requirements, the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection examines the information. The verification process normally takes 30–40 days.
The raw material and the final product are also analyzed by an approved chemist before packaging, to ensure that they are up to the AGMARK standard.
The products are regularly checked by the DMI officers after being tested. They put the samples gathered within the premises of the company against those in the market. On passing all checks, an AGMARK licence is issued.
The duration takes approximately 40–60 days.
The AGMARK licence is valid for five years. The renewal can be performed up to three months before the date of expiration.
