Highlighted industries are sectors that drive economic growth, innovation, and job creation. They often involve cutting-edge technologies, sustainable solutions.
In today’s competitive market, it is difficult to remain active without maintaining good quality and obtaining proper certification. A BIS license may be required before placing a product in the Indian market. To obtain BIS approval, manufacturers must comply with the relevant Indian Standard applicable to the product.
Below is a simplified overview of IS 2835:1987 for flat transparent sheet glass.
IS 2835:1987 specifies the requirements, sampling procedures, and test methods for flat transparent sheet glass. This type of glass is commonly used in photographic plates, mirrors, projection slides, toughened or laminated safety glass, glazing applications, and framing work.
Sheet glass is clear and flat with a glossy surface. While it appears smooth, it may show a slight wave pattern when viewed from certain angles.
As per IS 2835:1987, sheet glass is classified into four quality grades:
Sheet glass must be flat, transparent, and free from cracks. A slight tint may be visible when viewed from the edge. The nominal thickness, thickness tolerances, and size limits of cut pieces must comply with the values specified in the standard.
The following tests are conducted to evaluate sheet glass quality:
All tests must be carried out in a properly maintained laboratory using the procedures defined in the standard. Separate test samples are required for each quality grade.
Packing and marking must comply with the provisions of IS 2835:1987. Each package must clearly indicate the glass quality, nominal thickness, manufacturer’s name or trademark, and a batch code or serial number.
The ISI mark may be applied once the manufacturer obtains a valid BIS license.
The BIS license is granted after assessment of the manufacturing facility, evaluation of testing capabilities, and review of the production process by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
For complete details of the BIS ISI certification process, manufacturers may refer to:
When a product falls under the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, all manufacturers and importers must obtain BIS ISI certification. The Bureau of Indian Standards may suspend or cancel the license if the product does not comply with prescribed requirements.
