Highlighted industries are sectors that drive economic growth, innovation, and job creation. They often involve cutting-edge technologies, sustainable solutions.
In today’s competitive market, maintaining quality and obtaining proper certification is essential. A BIS license may be required before placing a product in the Indian market. To obtain BIS approval for safety glass, manufacturers must comply with the relevant Indian Standard applicable to this product.
Below is a simplified overview of IS 2553 (Part 1):2018 for safety glass.
This standard specifies requirements for safety glass used in buildings, residential structures, and railway coaches. It defines the basic requirements, sampling procedures, and testing methods for safety glass used in windows, doors, and railway applications.
Safety glass under this standard is classified into the following four categories:
The glass must be flat, transparent, and meet the quality grades specified in the standard. The thickness of the glass must comply with standard limits and be verified using prescribed measurement methods.
Glass manufactured from AA or A grade sheet glass must not contain defects beyond the permissible limits defined for those grades.
The following tests are conducted to evaluate safety glass performance:
All tests must be carried out as per the methods specified in the standard and conducted in a laboratory equipped with appropriate facilities and qualified personnel.
Packing and marking must strictly comply with the provisions of the standard. Each package must display all required information as specified in the document.
Every piece of safety glass must bear the ISI mark after successfully passing all mandatory tests.
Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards before applying the ISI mark. The license is granted after assessment of the manufacturing facility, testing capabilities, quality control systems, and production processes.

If a product falls under the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, all manufacturers and importers must obtain BIS ISI certification. The Bureau of Indian Standards has the authority to suspend or cancel the license if the product fails to comply with prescribed requirements.
