Highlighted industries are sectors that drive economic growth, innovation, and job creation. They often involve cutting-edge technologies, sustainable solutions.
In today’s competitive market, it is difficult to sustain growth without maintaining good quality and obtaining proper certification. A BIS license may be required before introducing a product into the Indian market. To obtain BIS approval, manufacturers must comply with the Indian Standard applicable to their product.
Below is a clear overview of IS 14900:2018 for transparent float glass.
Transparent float glass is covered under IS 14900:2018. This standard was issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards after the draft prepared by the Glassware Sectional Committee was approved by the Chemical Division Council.
The standard specifies requirements, sampling procedures, and test methods for flat, clear float glass with smooth and plain surfaces. It applies to cut sizes and stock sheets that may be square, rectangular, or of other shapes.
This standard does not apply to tinted, coated, frosted, heat-absorbing, or low light transmission glass.
Float glass is produced by allowing molten glass from a tank furnace to flow over a bath of molten tin under a controlled atmosphere of nitrogen and hydrogen. This process results in a clear glass sheet with flat, parallel surfaces that provide high optical clarity and reflection quality.
Glass thickness must be measured in accordance with the procedure specified in Annex A of the standard.
For cut sizes, the length and width must be verified as per the guidelines mentioned in Annex B. Thickness tolerances and dimensional limits must strictly comply with the values defined in IS 14900:2018.
The following tests are conducted to assess the quality and performance of transparent float glass:
The glass must be packed using shock-absorbing materials and placed in strong wooden cases to prevent damage during handling and transport.
Each package must carry all information specified in the standard. If the product complies with IS 14900:2018, it becomes eligible for certification under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, along with applicable rules.
The ISI mark may be applied only after obtaining a BIS license. The license is granted following an evaluation of the manufacturing facility, testing capability, and production processes by BIS officials.

When a product falls under the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, all manufacturers and importers are required to obtain BIS ISI certification. The Bureau of Indian Standards may suspend or cancel the license if the product fails to meet prescribed requirements.
